The Rise Of Bot Attacks

Half of all small businesses will be a victim of a cyberattack within the next twelve months. There are many different types of attacks with a growing rise in the number of bot attacks. A bot is a software application or script that automatically completes tasks on command. There are numerous malicious bots that allow a cybercriminal to remotely take over an affected computer.

Once in control, the machine is often referred to as a zombie. And it can be used for numerous actions. This can include things like: sending spam emails, scraping customer data and executing DDOS attacks on legitimate businesses. Normally, the bots are so small on a computer system that machine owners don’t realize that their device is affected. If there is a noticeable impact, it is often that the machine will have random periods of slowness.

What Is Bot Security

Bot security is security software that identifies whether traffic is from a human or comes from a machine. It then controls access to your website/device by allowing genuine requests to filter through while blocking malicious and other suspicious requests. Going deeper than this, the software needs to determine what is a good bot and what is a bad bot. This is because, while approximately half of all traffic on the internet potential comes from bots, some of them are useful for your business: such as those that are indexing your website for search engines. Therefore, good bot security (otherwise known as bot management) is there to help legitimate bots through to your website while blocking the malicious bots.

How Does Bot Security Work

In essence, what bot security does is to run tests that determine where the incoming request has come from and divides it into two groups: humans and good bots and unknown and malicious bots. The unknown and malicious is treated the same. If a business or an organization can’t afford to assume a positive profile, then bot security systems don’t take a chance. The positive of this is that it protects your systems from data theft and other potential problems. Of course there are different ways that bot security can run a test. Many use a captcha as a basic detection tool, with two captcha tests normally deployed (we deploy five for extra security). Another solution is IP rate limiting that prevents excessive requests being made from one address that could overload your server. Another core strategy is the JavaScript challenge and this is linked to what the end user’s browser is. If a human uses a browser (i.e. Microsoft Edge, Firefox, etc.) then their browser will have a JavaScript engine (plus some other specific features needed to run many web applications). Bot security will check that these are in place. If not, then it is certain that the end user is not human and most likely a bot.

Bot Security On The Front-lines

Bot security is at the forefront of the modern cyber-security war. You can’t do without it as it protects your systems from data theft and other cyber-crimes. If you’ve ever suffered an attack, you will realize how bot security can protect you and your business.

Bot security is a complex process but one that you won’t even notice running on your devices or website. There are several layers of protection and different bot security services offer different ways to protect your systems. However, you want to make sure that your bot management is as tight as possible.
